Water Industry Powered by Flender

Flender Power Transmission has a wealth of experience in the water industry, with its world leading ranges of gears and geared motors proving their reliability and performance in the toughest industries: from sewage treatment equipment to hydro-power generation, water pumps and screw conveyors, Flender has a product for every application.

As an example, Flender's gearboxes for the effluent treatment industry have been fitted to screw pumps operating on the simple but effective Archimedean spiral principle of lifting large volumes of water to different heights within the sewerage process, with typical capacities of 2,570 litres/second. The Flender FZG units are often mounted at 30° below horizontal, and fitted with backstops. The FZG unit's reputation in this sector is unrivalled, thanks to its outstanding reliability, low noise and high torque capacity. Many units are also supplied with Flender's Rupex flexible couplings.

Flender is well known for its involvement in the growing area of renewables, and one of the more interesting applications for Flender units in this sector has included the supply of an FZG geared water turbine for electricity generator Harperstown Power in Northern Ireland. Here the Flender unit supplies electricity to an 18th century water mill and feeds the excess generated to Energia in Belfast. It was supplied with a Neupex flexible coupling and a Zapex gear type coupling.

Flender has also donated units to aid water mill restoration, such as to Redbournbury Water Mill near St Albans, where a Motox-N unit is working in conjunction with a 1935 restored Crossley engine to help the mill once again grind and sell its own flour.

Working with major water utilities like Anglian Water, Flender has supplied Motox geared motor units weighing around 1000 kgs each, combined with torque limiters, to replace other existing equipment for applications like sewage treatment works picket fence thickener tanks, running 24 hours a day at around 0.06rpm in most cases.

Better Inverters

Flender also has a newly upgraded Motox Master range of motor integrated frequency inverters, featuring the latest Siemens integrated inverters. These now save labour/installation time and hardware space through being fully integrated, are self-cooling and able to operate in temperatures from -10°C to 40°C, and have enclosure ratings to IP 66.
