Siemens Flender Helps Packaging Company Save Costs
A new Flender gear unit is helping a Lancashire based packaging company save on its maintenance costs – and reduce its energy costs at the same time.
Siemens Flender provided the FZG H3SH07 horizontally mounted gear unit driving a dewatering screw press at Mondi Packaging’s paper mill in Ramsbottom, replacing another manufacturer’s unit that had been consistently unreliable and responsible for several plant breakdowns of the specialist disperse unit. The mill produces fluting and liner paper for the corrugated case industry, and the frequent breakdowns and need for maintenance were directly affecting production capacity.
Darren Hoyle, Mondi Packaging works engineering superintendent, described how the new Flender unit was helping the company improve its efficiency:
"The new unit is using less power than the original one and is therefore costing us less to run. But more significantly, it has proven much more reliable since its installation. With the old unit we were experiencing the need for costly overhauls every seven to 12 months. We were able to install this new Flender unit for less than the cost of a refurbishment on the old one."
Mondi Packaging has recently been reviewing all its drives at the Ramsbottom site and is currently looking at installing another Flender gear unit. The FZG unit at Ramsbottom had nominal torque capacity of 20,500 Nm, an actual speed of 37 rpm at the output shaft, and a ratio of 27.71.
