Flender Cavex Celebrates 50 Years of Success

With the frenetic pace of technological development today, it's a rare product that can claim a successful 50-year life cycle. Flender's Cavex worm gear unit, which was first launched at the 1952 Hanover Fair, celebrating its 50th birthday at Hanover 2003, can do just that!

Cavex has been refined and developed by Flender during the 50 years of its worldwide use, but the same basic product has endured due to its superior yet simple design and high levels of technical competence and durability. cavex

The hollow flank with its high efficiency of well over 90% forms the basis of the Cavex gear unit. The pairing of the worms with the hollow/concave tooth flanks is done with worm wheels that are crowned/convex. A patented design, this system has a number of advantages over conventional worm gear units:

  • higher load bearing capacity
  • higher efficiency
  • longer service life
  • lower heat generation

Flender worm gear units are used for applications as diverse as escalators, machine tools, actuating drives, lifts, concrete mixers and cutting and press equipment. The special requirements of these applications with regard to features like noise and running characteristics, tooth life and alternating service loads have provided excellent opportunities to demonstrate the high performance capability of Cavex.

Maximising contact ratios ensures lower noise, whilst the unique angle developed by the thicker concave profile teeth means a better lubricating film and greater security against tooth fracture, as well as insensitivity to shock loads.
